I am an obsessive maker. As a child I craved scissors and fabrics, paints and modelling materials. When I found the techniques section of the local library, I stopped reading stories and started to learn how to make things. I always was, and still am, full of ideas. I could never just make something from a kit, I had to create something different from the components. I originally trained as an industrial designer and worked in product design and research fields for 20 years until I finally became too frustrated by the creative limitations of the environments in which I found myself. To release and develop my creative imagination, I upped sticks from London and moved to Salisbury with my husband and completed a Contemporary Arts Practice degree course at BathSpa University.
My art is truly mixed media. I have always created using fabric and knit because they were accessible to me at home. I have since added more textile techniques to my repertoire as the facilities have become available. More recently I have been making sculptural pieces using techniques including CNC cut wood, laser cut plastic, scagliola, welded steel components, ceramic and paint. I have also been exploring the use of print techniques and colouring fabrics in my work. Anything can inspire me, but I prefer subjects that exude joy. I will often make a series of works that interrogate a theme or idea using a wide palette of media. My art tends to adopt a figurative style allowing my imagination to transform objects into alternatively realised forms.
Making art is my life, my vocation. It is a joyful release of creative energy that I want to share.
