HEATHER OLSEN
I dropped art at 13, to take all the “academic” subjects. This rankled - I loved art.
Years later, when I stopped work, art! Short courses at London art schools beckoned and ceramics, something I hadn’t done before, enthused me.
Back home, I sculpted at Salisbury Arts Centre with Charlotte Moreton. I throw stoneware and porcelain with Julie Ayton, and work in earthenware and raku with Rob Whelpton in the Wylye valley. I experiment with lace, seashells, leaves and found objects to texture the clay’s surface.
I make things to raise a smile – animals; paint-boxes; and tiny tables set for breakfast!
Ceramics offers scope for continual learning. I want to understand the techniques and science of ceramics and mix my own glazes. Maybe not entirely surprising as my father was a research chemist and keen amateur artist!
